Angel Dress

36.00

This one is classic Vionnet -- works like a T-shirt -- pop it over the head, done and out the door!  The pattern looks like the angel children make in the snow and has just two pieces on the bias, front and back, with the trumpet sleeves cut in one.  The unusual part is that the right sleeve is cut in one with the front and the left sleeve is cut in one with the back, showing one raglan sleeve seam on the right back and the left front.  The front seam is the opening for the neck and can be buttoned or left open for a dramatic asymmetrical neckline.  Clever pattern makers can cut away one sleeve to yield a one-shouldered option but that is not included in the pattern as sold. A separate straight band collar, wide or narrow, may also be easily added and worn open.  Dress can be belted with a matching sash from the remainder of the fabric as the bias helps reduce the extra fullness at the waist.  May be made full length in silk velvet, for instance, as a fabulous gown.  Can be cut and sewn in one day!

The edges in the models shown are simply serged but a couture version would have hand rolled edges. It is best done in a very "biasy" fabric, heavy in the hand, with a lots of stretchy drape. Knits may work, but you need to experiment.  The correct choice of fabric lets the dress elongate on the body so that it fits through the shoulders and bust but skims the body loosely through the torso and hips with a lot of motion in the skirt.  Sizes 6 - 16.  Bust sizes: 6 -- 30.5"; 8 -- 31.5"; 10 --32.5"; 12 -- 34"; 14 -- 36"; 16 -- 38".
